I have been fighting a sinus infection for over two weeks now. I took Bryson to the doctor on Monday (at which time he was diagnosed with a double ear infection), and decided to see the doctor myself on Tuesday. All was going well until she listened to my heart. She listened... moved the stethoscope and listened... made a funny face and moved the stethoscope again... and listened some more. Then she proceeded to tell me that I have a heart murmur. She started asking me questions about my heart murmur. I think at that point I zoned out a bit, and was having trouble even focusing on what she was saying. A heart murmur?
I immediately had a million questions. How long has it been there? What is causing it? What does this mean for my future? For future pregnancies?
I think there is a definite disadvantage to being a nurse when it comes to your own health. People in the medical profession assume that because you're also in the profession you don't need the explanations, the calming words. I am a cardiac nurse by background- and let me tell you- all of that knowledge FLEW out the window when we were suddenly talking about MY heart.
She said that she wanted to see me back in her office today, to listen again. So, back I went. Lots of praying but it's still there. She ordered an echo cardiogram that they will call me to schedule next week.
On one hand I know that this could be absolutely nothing to worry about. My Mom has a heart murmur. My grandmother had a heart murmur. I hear them frequently when assessing my patients.
On the other hand I am pretty panicked. This is my heart. Not my toe or my finger- but my heart. Scary.
So, I guess I have to wait it out. I'm trying to be patient and not assume the worst (which I have a horrible habit of doing). I know that I serve an awesome God and that He is in control.
Trying to rest in that tonight...
Oh Courtney, I am sure that is really scary. Praying for you. We need to talk soon. Love you.

Praying for you friend! God is in complete control and has this all in His hands. Trust in him and lay all your anxiety at His feet. Praying for peace for you to rest tonight. Talk to you very soon.
ReplyDeleteLet me know what you find out. I also have a heart murmur - born with it. I can say I had no problem with either pregnancy. I will pray you get good news. I know this is a hard time right now.
ReplyDeleteI know it's not the same thing...but I was diagnosed with SVT when pregnant with Caden, I finally did the ablation because my cardiologist didn't recommend future pregnancies unless I had it done...but it didn't work and unfortunately I didn't know that until I was pregnant with Colton. So, needless to say-I'm stopping at two. Not sure why I decided to share, but I thought somehow it might help. Anyway, I really hope everything is okay. I'm always up for an email or a chat if you need anything!
